This item was collected and digitized as part of the Harriet Tubman House Memory Project, a Boston Research Center effort from 2020 to 2022 to preserve the history of the Harriet Tubman House, which stood at 566 Columbus Avenue in Boston's South End neighborhood from 1975 to 2020. The building was the base of operations for United South End Settlements (USES), as well as a community center, gathering space, art gallery, and main office for several nonprofit organizations. Harriet Tubman House services continue at USES' historic Rutland Street campus. The Harriet Tubman House Memory Project was designed with current staff of the USES and community members affiliated with the activist group I Am Harriet (IAH). These interviews largely took place via remote recording technology during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, and were conducted by staff and volunteers at the Northeastern University Library and the Boston Public Library. These interviews represent the stories of past and present staff, artists, and community members involved with the Harriet Tubman House since the building's development in the 1970s.

An interview with Jared Katsiane, a filmmaker whose work has been shaped through growing up in the South End in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1990, after stints living in Vermont and in and around other parts of Boston, he moved back to the South End, where he has lived since that year. Katsiane recalls early memories of the neighborhood and attending community programs hosted by the United South End Settlements (USES) at the Harriet Tubman House, and later became a volunteer and filmmaker there in the 1990s. He also discusses his active involvement in neighborhood as an adult at the Tubman House, community events there, and the changing landscape over time.

An interview with Marisa Luse, who is the Campus Engagement and Collaborations Manager at Northeastern University. She grew up in Roxbury-close to the South End-in the 1980s, and she recounts how the Harriet Tubman House of the United South End Settlements (USES) was an anchor and center of community life. Luse also discusses busing and racial tensions during those years, her family dynamics, and the inspirations to pursue community work in her own career.

An interview with Kenneth E. Kruckemeyer, who is originally from Cincinnati and a longtime resident of the South End since the late 1960s. Kruckemeyer is an urbanist and transportation strategist, who has worked at state and local levels in Massachusetts, including for the Department of Public Works in the 1980s and early 1990s, and founded the LivableStreets Alliance in 2005. In this interview, he discusses the changing urban fabric and housing in the neighborhood over the course of his lifetime, and professional interactions with colleagues in the fields of architecture and urbanism in the 1970s and 1980s. Kruckemeyer also talks about the role of the United South End Settlements' (USES) Harriet Tubman House on the community.
